Since 1881, rectors of St John’s have come from Cudal. Between 1879-1882, the present brick church of St John’s was built, situated on a block, according to the deeds, on the corner of Hamilton and Hill streets and licensed by Bishop Marsden on 13 June 1882. Entries in the marriage register of those times are of interest.               October 1872, Daniel John Robertson, mechanical engineer and Ellen Rodden, born Queanbeyan.                  4 September 1876, Robert Trudgett, squatter of Gum Flat and Hannah Henning of Shepherds creek at the bridegrooms residence at gum Flat. The first baptisms conducted by Reverend A.R Blackett and recorded in the register at Grenfell were:                            10 March 1874 at Gum Flat, Emma George, daughter of Henry George, a miner.                  10 March 1874, Lily Grace McMahon, father John and mother Sarah, a storekeeper.                  2 August 1874, at Cargo, Richard Mayne, son of William and Catherine Mayne, a farmer.                  19 July 1875, Edmund Church, son of Alfred and Anne Church, a farmer.                  18 October 1875, at Cargo, Catherine Rosina Mayne, daughter of Samuel and Emily Mayne, innkeeper.                  18 October 1875, Matilda Anne Collis, at Cargo, daughter of a storekeeper.                  26 October 1875, at Gum Flat, Jane Godfrey, daughter of William and Elizabeth Godfrey, a farmer.                  24 June 1877, at Gum Flat, Charles George Sherwin, son of William and Emily Sherwin, a farmer.  Beautiful windows have been placed in the church in memory of Joseph Richard Wythes of Uralba, the Robinson family of “the Willows” and a plaque for the Atkinson family of “Canomodine”. The  sanctuary lamp was given in memory of Alma Whiley. The organist for many years was Eve Sargent and Sunday school had been conducted since 1970 by Joyce Whiley. Families who supported St Johns in earlier years were Hamilton, Mayne, Robinson, Hendrey, Brown, Sargent, Atkinson and Whiley.
